How Infrared Cameras Help Identify Hidden Moisture

By Central Coast Building Diagnostics · June 22, 2026

What infrared thermography actually shows

An infrared camera detects surface temperature differences. Wet materials typically retain or lose heat differently than dry ones, which can reveal moisture patterns not visible to the eye.

It’s a screening tool, not a moisture meter

Infrared imaging identifies areas worth testing further — it doesn’t measure moisture content directly. Findings are typically confirmed with a moisture meter or other direct testing.

Conditions matter

Temperature differentials, recent weather, and material type all affect what an infrared scan can reveal, which is why timing and interpretation matter as much as the equipment.

Where it’s most useful

Infrared thermography is particularly useful for scanning large areas — roofs, walls, ceilings — to narrow down where a more detailed, invasive look is actually warranted.
